The EUDR and charcoal: what applies from 2027.
Deforestation-free supply chains become mandatory – for charcoal too. What that means in practice, and why EU origin is the simplest answer.
Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 – the EUDR – requires deforestation-free supply chains for certain commodities and products. Charcoal is covered as a wood product. Anyone placing it on the EU market or trading it will have to prove the wood comes from deforestation-free land: with a due diligence statement, geolocation of the source plots and a risk assessment. As things stand, the obligations for charcoal supply chains apply from 2027. (The regulation itself is on EUR-Lex; this page is an orientation, not legal advice.)
For overseas product this means: source plots in South America or the Caribbean must be geolocated, risks assessed and documented across long supply chains. Doable – but demanding, and the burden sits with every link in the chain.
